Welcome to the Austin Employment Blog!

Austin, Texas is where I have lived for almost 40 years.  It has a vibrant, diverse  economy and lots of jobs.  This blog will document employment related phenomena, particularly stuff that can pull the rug out from underneath job seekers.  Although only one man's opinions, I suggest there will be lots of useful information here.  I will be talking specifically about Austin, but similar things will be happening in other parts of the country, and perhaps the world.

Silicon Valley may well be at the forefront of high tech, ahead of us here, and we may be ahead of other parts of the country.  The important point is that conditions in the employment world are changing very rapidly, and the smart people will be keeping up with the changes so they can make good decisions.

A fairly thorough Google search turned up lots of job sites for Austin, but no general blog devoted to documenting the changes happening around us, particularly the big economic waves. Thus, this blog. You are free to comment on the posts, if you choose to (anonymous posting enabled now). Please, keep it civilized and free of politics. You may also share with friends and colleagues if you are so inclined.

Contractors

As you might have surmised, I suspect the job market in Austin will be moving in a few particular directions .  Currently, I see a lot of recruiting activity , but I also expect that to be ephemeral and temporary.  For job seekers, my recommendation is grab while the grabbing is good . For job seekers, there are exactly two classes currently operating in the market: principal companies (hiring mostly employees) and contracting companies , hiring mostly W2 contractors.  In case you missed the memo, a W2 contractor is an employee of the contracting company, but a contractor from the point of view of the principal (hiring) company.  All contractors are considered disposable by definition, which is why they were hired under those conditions in the first place.  NB: A W2 contractor is in a weak position legally and from a taxation standpoint.  Accountants and attorney are recommended.
